Grimsby Fish Market upgrade due to begin this week
Published:  26 July, 2011

WORK is due to start this week on the long-awaited plan to modernise Grimsby Fish Market.

The £1.2-million project is likely to take several months to complete and an appeal has gone out to users to be both patient and co-operative during the inevitable disruption on some days.

The plan to install chilling equipment and compartmentalise the main hall into separate grading and sales areas. There will also be alterations to part of the loading bay area and other improvements. When completed it will make the Grimsby market among the most modern in the country. Steve Norton, chief executive of the Grimsby Fish Merchants association, said: “We are delighted that work has at last started. It was delayed because of funding issues, but it does mean that, when completed, we shall have something which will be of great benefit to Grimsby and its fishing industry.”

It is now almost two months since the closure of Hull Fish Market Atlantic Fresh, the main importer of Icelandic fish into the Humber, said it was going to concentrate on Grimsby. This has led to a major surge in fish into Grimsby. Last week the market handled well over 10,000 boxes – something not seen for over a year. Trading has been good with prices holding up quite well.

It has also brought many more Hull merchants onto the Grimsby market. Steve Norton said: “It is good to see more fish again and it will help the finances of the market. “The Hull merchants have integrated very well and some of them have  joined our association. They are most welcome."
