A PUB in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales has restored Britain's pride by reclaiming the world record for serving the largest portion of fish and chips.
The Wensleydale Heifer in West Witton served up a fish supper weighing just over 100 lbs - or 45 kilograms. The previous record had been held for the last seven years by the Black Rose restaurant in Boston Massachusetts in the United States which had cooked 78 lbs of fish and chips.
The staff used over four gallons of batter to cook the fish which included prime halibut. The Yorkshire Dales feat has now been officially recorded by the Guinness Book of Records.
A crowd of more than 200 people from the village turned up to sample the monster fish dish with donations for the food going to the Help The Heroes charity.
David Moss, owner of the Wensleydale Heifer, said he was delighted that his pub had regained the record for Britain. “I’d like to thank all the staff at The Heifer for their sterling efforts and for all the people who supported us The fish and chips tasted great but I think for now we will stick to serving more normal size fillets."
In fact the Wensleydale Heifer already holds awards as a top seafood restaurant.
But the Yorkshire Dales wasn't the only place in the country where a monster fry-up was taking place. Two hundred miles further south at Southend on Sea the fish and chip shop at the resort's Adventure Island fun park cooked up a whopping 988 lbs (440 kilos) of chips (no fish) - the world's largest portion of fried potatoes.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
