The Council of Ministers of Economy and Finance of the European Union (EU) has increased fishing quotas for mackerel, blue whiting and Norwegian lobster for the Spanish fishing sector.
These were brought in following the amendment of the Rules of the Total Allowable Catch (TAC) and quotas for 2011, and after the efforts undertaken by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM).
Now vessels from Spain will have additional fees that will increase the already available ones for 2011; increases of 1,300 tonnes for blue whiting; 6,000 tonnes for mackerel and 300 tonnes for Norwegian lobster in the Porcupine area.
"This increase in 'stocks' is part of the continuing defence of the Spanish fishing sector by MARM, through the Maritime General Secretariat, based on scientific reports, sustainability of fisheries and the protection of employment in Spanish coastal areas," said MARM in a press release.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
