A DELEGATION of Dutch dignitaries visited Grimsby today (Wednesday, June 8) to develop business links and tourism opportunities.
The Mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Cllr Mrs Susan Pickett, greeted the party from Urk at the Fishing Heritage Centre on Alexandra dock, Grimsby.
The delegation from the Netherlands was led by Urk's deputy mayor Dhr. Benjamin Visser and included senior councillors, academics and entrepreneurs from the Dutch fish processing and shipbuilding industries.
Urk is a municipality and town in the Flevoland province in the central Netherlands, like Grimsby, its economy has historically been based around fishing and the products of the sea.
The delegation was particularly interested in visiting Grimsby's Fishing Heritage Centre, as they are trying to establish a similar attraction in Urk.
Deputy mayor Visser, said: “We thank our host for having us here. There is a long history of seafood trade between Grimsby and Urk. The Heritage Centre is a great example for us to establish in our home town."
The visit also presented opportunities to explore areas of collaboration within the seafood industry through presentations held at the Humber Seafood Institute, which showcased Grimsby as a centre of excellence for seafood processing.
Madam mayor said: "I hope today will highlight new trade and tourism opportunities for both towns and I look forward to strengthening our links with the people of Urk."
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
