Net to Plate project launched in Cornwall
Published:  07 June, 2011

A new project has been launched to connect school children with Cornwall’s fishing industry.

The project is being co-ordinated by Seafood Cornwall Training and is supported by Falfish, a leading seafood processor in Cornwall. Six schools will have the opportunity to visit the heart of Cornwall’s fishing industry, Newlyn, for fish fact finding activities, with the first, from Launceston, visiting Newlyn later this week.

Sarah Crosbie, manager of Seafood Cornwall Training, who organises the visits, explained: “Bringing children to Newlyn from Cornish schools means they can see, feel and breathe the fish and fishing industry, a key part of Cornwall’s heritage and economic future.  We adapt each visit to suit the schools’ needs and if past visits are anything to go by, it’s something the children won’t ever forget.  There is still funding and support for four further school visits, so please call to secure a place.”

During their visit, the children meet fishermen and learn about the different types of fishing boats tied to the harbour quay and the fish they catch, before climbing aboard the Penlee lifeboat for a lesson about safety at sea.  They also visit W Harvey & Sons shellfish tanks, where the children can look at and touch the different shellfish stored there.

Mark Greet, Falfish Managing Director, said: “It’s really great to be able to support this project which encourages Cornwall’s children to come and see what really goes on in the counties fishing industry.  Who knows some of them may be the fishermen, filleters or chefs of tomorrow.”

Andy Wheeler, Cornish Fish Producers Organisation ltd (CFPO), who leads the children around Newlyn, added: “The CFPO is delighted to be able to support this project, as a visit to Newlyn to learn about fish and fishing, is a fun and exciting way for children to learn about where their food comes from.”
