FIVE Star Fish, the big Grimsby-based fish processing company, has a new managing director. He is Ellis Ward, who has been with the parent company, the 2 Sisters Food Group, for the past nine years.
He has a wealth of experience in the food industry generally especially in the areas of sales and purchasing. He replaces Danny Burton who stepped down in March this year after 25 years with Five Star.
He was one of the directors who helped the company to spectacular growth when it was owned by its founder John Fenty, who is also chairman of Grimsby Town Football Club. Mr Burton said in March that after such a long spell with the company he felt he wanted to take some time out.
John Fenty sold Five Star just over six years ago and it was later acquired by the British Seafood Group which went into administration 15 months ago. However, within a few weeks it was rescued from the administrators by Ranjit Singh Boparan, founder and head of the fast expanding 2 Sisters Food Group in a deal thought to be worth over £30 million. Five Star is a major supplier to the food service sector and has a 2,000 square metre factory and a 5,000 pallet cold store in Grimsby. Sea Chef is its premium brand.
Five Star is also being fully integrated by its owner Ranjit Boparan into the 2 Sisters Food Group. He also owns the Harry Ramsden fish restaurant chain and recently pulled off his biggest coup yet when he bought Northern Foods in a £340 million deal. Last week Mr Boparan was placed at 275th in the Sunday Times Rich List - up 79 places. His wealth is said to have increased by £95-million in the past 12 months to a new high of £275-million.
