ATLANTIC Fresh, the main importer of Icelandic caught fish into the Humber, has undergone a management buyout.
It is understood that negotiations have been taking place for some time and the deal involves the buyout of the holdings of Isberg and Icebrit which merged in 2005 to create Atlantic Fresh.
There are now just two main directors with Magnus Gudmundsson becoming chairman of the company with a special focus on growth opportuunities, while Orn Eyfjord Jonsson is appointed managing director.
The company said last night that supply chain management will increasingly be the key element of successful fish trading.
It is thought the new arrangement will give Atlantic Fresh wider buying opportunities including from other European countries which, hopefully, will lead to increased supply.
Magnus Gudmundsson said: “Peter Bjornsson, who founded Isberg in Hull, and Icebrit’s Pall Sveinsson in Grimsby established businesses with a firm supplier base.
“That was the foundation on which we have developed the marketing systems and valued added chain that has taken us further into Europe. Their reward is our inheritance.”
The company has its head office in Grimsby. But the company will continue to trade from both Humber ports and also through Atlantic Fresh (Europe) Ltd., which has an office in Boulogne.
Orn Jonsson said: “The Humber is a logistics hub, especially for fish, and that is a matter of geography as much as tradition. As resource management continues to improve, the supply chain becomes even more critical in maintaining the quality of an increasingly valuable product.”
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
