The Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Juan Andrés Fontaine, and the head of the Undersecretariat of Fisheries (Subpesca), Pablo Galilea, in Chile have announced the names of the five members that will make up the panel of experts for the national aquaculture industry.
The panel members are: Oscar Melo, Guillermo Donoso, Rafael Epstein, Oscar Cristi and Santiago Urcelay.
The main objectives of the new committee are to prepare the Health Regulations for Aquaculture (RESA); analyse the use of macrozones and smoltification for salmon and trout; and complement the technical and health vision of the Ministry of Economy, whilst looking at the economic and social effects of the measures proposed by the Government and the aquaculture sector.
The working group is part of the government's commitment to promote the sustainable development of the aquaculture industry, according to Fontaine.
He said experience told them that they must respect the environment, the environment and its own fish cycle, for Chile to achieve maximum potential and to register itself among the leading suppliers of salmon in the world.
With the definition of macro zones, they aim to avoid outbreaks of disease affecting salmon populations in the country.
Fontaine said the new health regulations would be ready in about four months.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
