Shetland Seafood Quality Control (SSQC) is leading the way in shellfish testing by achieving full accreditation for its shellfish biotoxin analysis from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
With just three laboratories in the UK accredited to carry out this type of analysis, SSQC is in a great position to build on this achievement.
The company can now offer local shellfish processors a fully accredited analysis of samples before they are despatched to customers on the mainland. This valuable service can be carried out in just four to five hours in Scalloway and offers timely product quality assurance verified by UKAS and supports official control sampling by the Food Standards Agency.
Niall O’Rourke, general manager at SSQC said: “We are delighted to have secured official UKAS accreditation for this service and we hope it will maintain consumer confidence in Shetland shellfish. Staff at SSQC have worked extremely hard to get these tests UKAS certified.
"We have collaborated successfully with the shellfish industry over a number of years and this latest achievement lays the foundation for a future service provision based on local specialist expertise.
"We are grateful to all customers who use our services and we would like to give special thanks to The Crown Estate who have assisted with funding for equipment and for helping us make this latest enterprise happen."
