County Clare Smokehouse Secures Valuable Sales Agreement with Prestigious London Food Hall
Published:  23 March, 2011

An acclaimed Irish food business has announced details of a successful new business win - to supply one of the UK’s most prestigious gourmet food halls.

Based in Lisdoonvarna, Co. Clare, The Burren Smokehouse has secured the agreement to supply Irish Smoked Irish Organic Salmon to Fortnum and Mason.

The premium quality Irish seafood product is now available to consumers as part of Fortnum and Mason’s distinguished own brand range.

With its six-level flagship store located in London’s Piccadilly, Fortnum and Mason specialises in superior quality groceries, confectionary, fresh food and seafood.

The Burren Smokehouse is owned and operated by husband and wife team, Peter and Birgitta Curtin, who established their rural-based artisan smokehouse business in 1989.

Speaking following the sales announcement, Birgitta explained that the new supply agreement with Fortnum’s is a unique endorsement of the high standards that The Burren Smokehouse subscribes to:

“We’re truly delighted to announce that we’re now supplying ‘Irish Smoked Irish Organic Salmon’ to such a renowned and long-established gourmet food emporium.  Fortnum’s is known for having the very highest standards and they only choose to source their products from suppliers who meet their rigorous specifications.

In fact, before we received confirmation that our supply agreement was proceeding, we met with several representatives from Fortnum and Mason. They thoroughly examined our processes and procedures, and even sent a quality manager to our smokehouse facility here in Lisdoonvarna to assess our quality systems and standards. All in all, it’s a huge compliment to have been selected as a supplier for such an exclusive label.”

Throughout the UK, Europe and further afield, there’s a growing appreciation of the wealth of fine food being produced in Ireland and the exceptional quality and innovative product development being offered by Irish producers.

The company continues to pursue international sales leads as part of the couple’s ambitious export sales campaign. Both Birgitta and Peter have identified numerous export opportunities worldwide, with particular interest coming from retailers and distributors in the US, Germany and France.

According to Peter, the company should be in a position to announce a number of new developments over the coming months:

“It’s shaping up to be an exciting period of expansion and growth. Our international online sales are thriving and we’ve recently redesigned and relaunched our popular website. We’re confident that we’ll be ready to reveal details of new export listings in the near future. We’re very close to confirming retail listings in the United States, Germany and France and we’re also pursuing a number of lucrative sales leads elsewhere across continental Europe.

Last year we decided to ‘think big’ and set ourselves some ambitious sales targets. So far our export growth strategy has been extremely successful – hopefully by the end of the year we’ll have announced several more sales agreements and we’ll be looking at the possibility of employing additional staff”.
