Protests against salmon cages in Spanish estuaries
Published:  10 March, 2011

Fishing unions and groups based around the estuaries of Muros and Noia, Spain, have demonstrated against the installation of salmon cages and are planning to organise protests to try to change the government's decisions.

The Ministry of Marine Affairs, of the Xunta de Galicia, informed representatives of the sector that they have authorised the transfer of two floating cages from the Arousa estuary to the Muros C polygon, as they consider it to be an ideal place. Salmon cages would be compatible with local fishing, according to the authorities.

The Galician government's decision is based on various technical and scientific reports by the Cluster and the University of Vigo, which contradict those made by biologists of the river based unions "and any others from Galicia", said the major patrons of Muros, in Daniel Formoso, and of Noia, in Santiago Cruz.

The members of the sector estimate that installation of the cages would be harmful to the estuaries of both Muros and Noia, and could negatively affect fish and shellfish.
