Norway seafood exports stride on

THERE seems to be no stopping Norway's astonishing growth as an exporters of seafood. The latest figures show that by the end of February the 2011 total was already around £1 billion - or some nine billion Norwegian kroners. This shows an increase of 17 per cent on the same period last year.

The results from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council show that exports in February alone amounted to 4.8 billion kroners, which is an increase of 626 million kroners or 15 per cent. This means that new export records have been set for the month of February and for the January/February period.

The export value of salmon for the last two months reached 4.7 billion kroners (around £500 million). The price for whole fresh salmon has increased by 8.60 kroners to an average of  39.46 kroners so far this year.

In February, the price reached  40.46 kroners. Russia has shown an increase so far this year of 149 million kroners, or 46 per cent, giving the salmon market the greatest growth. France is still the largest market for Norwegian salmon, with an export value of  670 million kroners, which represents an increase of 21 per cent, compared with the first two months of last year.

The export of herring increased by  203 million kroners to a total value of  1.2 billion kroners at the end of February. Germany is the market for herring that has shown the most growth in 2011.

China is the largest market for mackerel, with a value of 89 million kroners , although Russia comes a close second with a value of 80 million kroners, but South Korea is not far behind at 77 million kroners. Exports of fresh cod, including fillets, increased by 63 million kroners or 27 per cent to a total value of 292 million kroners.
