National Center for Research on Fisheries, Aquaculture and Farming Systems for Brazil
Published:  09 March, 2011

The Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) has begun construction on the first National Center for Research on Fisheries, Aquaculture and Farming Systems in Palmas, in the state of Tocantins.

This new facility, which will be a focal point for the sector, will focus on the study of development of native Brazilian waters.

The new center will be built in an area of 990,000 square meters and is expected to become operational in 2013.

Brazilian fisheries authorities hope the scientific body will promote a technological leap and will collaborate on the sustainability of the activity from an economic, social and environmental standpoint.

One goal is to help increase fish production in the country to 50,000 tonnes annually.

General manager of Embrapa, Carlos Magno Campos da Rocha, said the advantages of the centre were the chosen location and number of professionals who would work specifically in the areas of fisheries and aquaculture.

"Of the 90 employees at the center, 30 will be researchers. Our goal is to co-ordinate, catalyze and co-ordinate all research in the sector, together with other bodies and institutions," said Campos da Rocha.
