What happens in one part of the world can quickly influence supplies and prices on the other side.
Countries like Vietnam and Malaysia, which not that long ago were merely regional players in the seafood industry, are now firmly on the world stage, exporting seafood worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Europe and North America.
This is why Fishupdate.com now has a global reach and has become firmly established as one of the leading international fishing and seafood news websites. Its influential mixture of news and comment on this fast changing business is now read on every continent.
The pulling power of Fishupdate.com was aptly demonstrated recently when it carried a news item on a new book tracking the history of Grimsby, England, once the largest fishing port in the world and still today Europe's largest seafood processing centre.
The book, Feeding A Nation by fishing journalist Vincent McDonagh, was published to mark the centenary of the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association, but within hours of going out on the Fishupdate.com website, it was already attracting worldwide interest and orders for copies from Japan, Malaysia and Australia.
Fisheries expert Meryl Williams, who lives in Pilau Pinang, Malaysia and who is associated with the fisheries industry in Asia and Australia, was one of the first to order a copy and now plans to review for the journal Asian Fisheries Science. She compared it to the classic 1943 book "The Fish Gate", written by Michael Graham, the first scientists to link falling fish stocks to overfishing. Then Japanese fisheries history student Tad Yamawaki from Tokyo, who had visited Grimsby some years earlier, urgently requested a copy. The author said: "I was astonished at the level of interest from overseas, which has to be down to Fishupdate.com."
Steve Norton chief executive of the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association, said: "We are getting a lot of interest in the book from many quarters, both in Grimsby, from other parts of the country from abroad. It is quite rightly winning acclaim and everyone agrees that it is a high quality publication and a fascinating story with some superb photos." For fishermen, the seas they fish are local, but their markets span the globe. To keep up to date on what is happening in every corner of the world the only news website you need is Fishupdate.com
