Better news for Young's staff at Grimsby
Published:  23 February, 2011

THERE was somewhat better news for most of the Young's staff at the company's main factory in Humberstone Road in Grimsby today.

The seafood giant has completed the result of a 30-day staff consultation at the site and around 47 people will lose their jobs - and these through voluntary redundancy. This is some 37 fewer than expected.

Last month the company said that up to 84 jobs were threatened following the loss of a major contract. However, the good news is that 28 people have been transferred to new roles within the company, which  is Grimsby's largest private employer, with a workforce of some 1,700 people in the area. A small number who might have been made redundant are staying on for various reasons.

Young’s Seafood said it had concluded the 30-day consultation with staff at its Humberstone Road factory which started on January 19th.
From a potential loss of up to 84 positions, there have been 47 voluntary redundancies and 28 people have transferred to new roles within Young’s in Grimsby. There have been no forced redundancies. The initial number of anticipated redundancies has been reduced through the transfer of staff to different roles and a reconfiguration of production lines. The situation has also been helped by a positive upturn in production volume over recent weeks.

Steve Lidgett, operations director for Young’s Seafood Limited, said: “This has been a difficult process for everyone and, of course, we regret the fact that redundancies have been necessary. We are confident that 2011 will be a successful year and we are focused on accelerating growth by drawing on our scale, heritage and leadership in fish and seafood.”

Two weeks ago the parent Findus group announced a major internal restructuring bringing its seafood operations under one organisation and, at the same time, pledged its commitment to Grimsby.
