A NEW book tracing growth and history of the Grimsby fishing industry is starting to attract international attention.
"Feeding A Nation" by fishing journalist Vincent McDonagh celebrates 100 years of the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association and is already proving a popular buy in the Lincolnshire fishing port.
But now demand is starting to come in from overseas from countries like Australia and the US. But one of the most interesting includes a call from a fisheries expert in South Asia. Meryl Williams, who lives in Pilau Pinang, Malaysia and who is associated with the fisheries industry in Asia and Australia, said she found it thoroughly enjoyable from many aspects, especially the role of women in the fishing industry, the international links with Iceland and the tensions between the fish merchants and the trawler owners.
She related it to the classic 1943 book "The Fish Gate", written by Michael Graham, the first scientists to link falling fish stocks to overfishing. She says that Feeding A Nation is an excellent book and she now plans to write a review for the journal "Asian Fisheries Science". Feeding A Nation was published by Wyvex Media Ltd, whose interests include Fish Farmer and the Fishupdate.com website.
Steve Norton chief executive of the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association, said: "We are getting a lot of interest in the book from many quarters, both in Grimsby, from other parts of the country and from abroad. It is quite rightly winning acclaim and everyone agrees that it is a high quality publication and a fascinating story with some superb photos. The Grimsby FMA marks its actual centenary on April 28th.'
'Feeding A Nation' is priced at £25 and copies can be obtained by contacting the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association at Wharncliffe Road, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, DN31 3JQ.
