Canadian seafood company bids for British accreditation
Published:  21 February, 2011

CANADA'S Clearwater Seafoods has just announced the certification of two of its processing facilities under the British Retail Consortium (BRC) standard for food safety, indicating that it is intending to increase its interest in the UK retail market.

Apart from being one of the top quality standards, the BRC accreditation is now almost a "must" for seafood producers who want to do business with the major supermarket groups.

It was only last year that Clearwater's director John Risley, who founded the company in 1976, indicated that he would be looking to markets outside Canada for growth and Britain is clearly one of those. In fact Clearwater is already sending lobsters to Britain and Europe by air.

The two BRC accredited businesses are: Pierce Fisheries, specialising in processed lobster and individually quick frozen Canadian and Argentine scallops, and St. Anthony Seafoods, specializing in cooked and peeled shrimp.

They have now  been certified by the BRC, the global leader in third-party food safety standards.

Clearwater said these recent certifications recognised the company's  dedication to excellence in customer satisfaction by assigning an "A" grade to the company's stringent quality control and food safety measures.

Caroline Davis, general manager of St. Anthony Seafoods, explained the company's rationale in seeking the certification.

She said:  "Globally recognized certifications such as BRC and MSC (Marine Stewardship Council for fisheries sustainability) help us to ensure that our plants and practices are meeting the best possible standards and provide valuable third party recognition of our commitment to our customers."
