Fish processing factory saved
Published:  16 February, 2011

A FISH processing plant in Iceland  which sparked off a demonstration after it closed nearly three weeks ago has been rescued.

The fish company Eyraroddi hf, in the port of Flateyri filed for bankruptcy at the end of January and more than 40 people lost their jobs - a sizeable number in such a small town. Flateyri has a population of under 300.  Flares were set off in a symbolic protest at losing one of the port's two main employers.

Now two 'knights in armour" have ridden to the rescue in the shape of Sigurdur Adalsteinsson and Kristjan Kristjansson from the Lotnu fishing company who have bought the business and who plan to re-open the factory next week. It is hoped to employ up to 30 of those who lost their jobs and hopefully almost everyone, once the processing factory gets back into full production.

Hopes had been high that the plant could be brought back into production which formally closed before Christmas.  Kristjan Kristjansson  told Morgunbladid, Iceland's main daily newspaper that he hoped that the people of  Flateyri would be pleased with the news. "All of the feedback we've received have been positive and good, " he added. "We hope to begin production next week and the first employees are now being hired."

Improvements are being made to the fish houses and preparations were being made for fishing vessels to go to sea. The site  has a quota of around 300 tons which Lotna will automatically acquire and will be able to add to its existing quota.
