SUSTAINABILITY will feature strongly when the world's fishing industry gathers in Vancouver next week for the 2011 Seafood Summit.
The big show is being sponsored this year by the leading fish processor High Liner Foods of Canada which has been making some headlines itself with a recent 340 million euro bid for the Icelandic Group, which has production sites around the world.
High Liner said that it was committed to taking a pro-active leadership role to ensure that the oceans and its fisheries were healthy for future generations. Chief executive and president Henry Demone said the summit provided a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge and ideas to bring about positive change and he hoped to emerge from the event with a common vision for future sustainability.
He will certainly have that chance with around 600 scientists and fish activists gathering in Vancouver for the opening on January 31st with catchers, fish industry leaders and fish buyers. The event runs until February 2nd and will include field trips and workshops. Last year's summit, held in Paris, attracted more than 600 delegates.
The Vancouver Sun summed it up by saying: "Corporate CEOs and retail executives will be sharing the stage with the very people who might have been picketing their offices and stores a few short years ago. "
The summit began nine years ago as a gathering for non-government organisations, and to save the world fish stocks from collapse. But it was not long before it began to attract fishing related business leaders.
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
