Pinney's doubles number of seasonal staff
Published:  23 November, 2010

THERE was more seasonal employment good news for people in the Annan area this week with the news that Pinney's of Scotland was recruiting twice the number of temporary workers to meet the surge in Christmas demand.

Pinney's is a leading salmon producer in Scotland and the it announced it September that it was recruiting around 100 extra temporary workers. Now it has told Fishupdate that it is recruiting a further 100 people over the festive period which will run into the New Year. A spokeswoman said this is the time of the year when sales of salmon, both fresh and smoked, reach their peak.

Pinney's is owned by The Seafood Company of Grimsby which is part of The Findus group. But Pinney's is probably best known as being a Royal warrant supplier of smoked salmon to the Queen. The business, which with over 400 people is the largest employer in the Annan area,  was acquired from the convenience foods producer Uniq in a deal worth around £1-million in March last year. Since then the new owners have embarked on a major investment programme which will total around £3-million when completed.

Even without the impact of Christmas, demand for Scottish salmon is very high present because of its quality reputation and the continuing disease problems in Chile. Two weeks ago the retail giant Tesco reported a big increase in Scottish salmon sales. There has also been major investment in Scottish salmon farms over the past few months, particularly from Scandinavian countries like Norway. A number of other salmon  producers have also taken on extra staff to cover the Christmas rush.
