Scotland’s Chief Statistician today published the Scottish Fish Farm Production Survey 2009. The publication details statistics on the employment, production and fish escapes from Scottish Fish Farms.
It is structured to follow industry trends within the trout, salmon and other farmed species sectors. Some statistics are given for the 21-year period 1989-2009.
The main findings are:
* Production tonnage of Atlantic salmon increased by 12 per cent in 2009 to 144,247 tonnes. This increase comes after four years of relatively steady production levels.
* Production tonnage of Rainbow Trout decreased by 11.8 per cent in 2009 to 6,766 tonnes. This is against the recent trend of a small increase over the past four years.
* Cod production decreased from 1,822 tonnes in 2008 to 0.1 tonnes in 2009.

Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
