Seafish restores funding for business certification
Published:  20 October, 2010

Seafish, the authority on seafood, has restored its funding support to seafood businesses wishing, for the first time, to achieve British Retail Consortium (BRC) certification or Safe and Local Supplier Approval (SALSA) certification.

An industry review, which was recently completed by Seafish, demonstrated that support for SALSA and BRC certification has provided excellent value for the industry, so now a new package of funding has been committed.

Richard Wardell, from Seafish Training and Accreditation, said the benefits to businesses who achieve BRC or SALSA certifications have been well proven.

“Our recent report showed that the increase in both turnover and profits for those that become certified is significant.  Achieving BRC and SALSA certification can also have a positive impact on staff motivation and the efficiency of staff work.”

Since 2008, Seafish has assisted nearly 100 seafood processors and wholesalers wanting to achieve one or other of the two schemes.

BRC is seen as a condition of supply into the multiple retailer sector.

SALSA is a joint venture between the National Farmers Union (NFU), the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), the British Hospitality Association (BHA) and the BRC. The number of certified businesses has grown since its launch in 2007, with more multiple retailers requesting suppliers to hold this certification.
