THE Findus Group, which includes Young's of Grimsby and The Seafood Group, has praised a new hard hitting television documentary warning of a major threat to marine life and fish stocks.
The company said that, as a business with a longstanding commitment to sustainable fisheries, the Findus Group welcomes the new BBC Horizon documentary 'The Death of the Oceans?' - which it says makes an important contribution to wider awareness of some of the key issues facing the marine ecosystem.
Findus said: "We are particularly pleased that the film underlined the value of good science. The Census of Marine Life is an example of the kind of quality research that is indispensable if we are to properly understand the oceans and thus sustain them as a vital food source for the world’s growing population.
"The Findus Group continues to firmly support sustainable fishing through our 'Fish for Life' programme and 'Ten Principles for Responsible Fish Procurement'. It is our intention to source all wild caught fish for our brands from Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fisheries by 2012. We also seek to promote sustainable seafood to consumers through our products.
"Plus, we are driving to proactively reduce the environmental impact of our overall business through our broader 'Food for Life' agenda, which is particularly focused on CO2 reduction."
Their statement added: "As the film suggests, given co-operation between governments, industry, fishermen and scientists, it should be possible to implement effective management regimes that will repair and revive the world’s fish resources to secure them in the long term as a food resource. Our business will continue to engage with stakeholders and scientists around the world to help further this goal."
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
