Pinney's of Scotland take on 100 temporary staff
Published:  22 September, 2010

TOP salmon producer Pinney's of Scotland has announced that it is creating  around 100 temporary jobs at their factory in Annan.

The extra staff are being taken on to prepare for the run up to Christmas when sales of salmon - both smoked and fresh - reach their peak.

A spokeswoman at Pinney's told Fishupdate yesterday: "The period between now and December is a very busy one for us and we are glad we can create these temporary posts."

Pinney's is owned by The Seafood Company of Grimsby which is part of The Findus group. But Pinney's is probably best known as being a Royal warrant supplier of smoked salmon to the Queen. The business, which with over 400 people is the largest employer in the area,  was acquired from the convenience foods producer Uniq in a deal worth around £1-million in March last year. Since then the new owners have embarked on a major investment programme.

This was announced just a year ago when  The Seafood Company sanctioned a £3-million investment upgrade over a 36 month period designed to increase production and improve efficiency. The news was also more evidence of a revival in the seafood business in general.Scotland can expect most of its salmon processors to recruit extra workers in the next few weeks because of an expected rush in Christmas orders. In fact with the Chile disease problem still not complete over and some health issues in Norway, Scottish salmon is in big demand right now. Provided prices remain relatively stable, sales could reach record levels this festive season.
