Scotland to get healthy chippy
Published:  31 August, 2010

SCOTLAND is to get a radical new fish and chip shop - and the twist is that there may not be quite so  many chips on sale.

The Tower – located in the heart of Penicuik in Midlothian – prides itself on offering a somewhat different  menu to the traditional 'greasy spoon' chippy, one that provides a little something different to the traditional supper. Instead of conventional haddock and chips, The Tower offers sea bass and roast potatoes served with crumbed cauliflower.

Although fish is regarded as a very healthy food, nutritionists say that traditional British fish and chips is not because it is often cook in fat, including beef dripping.

Domenico Pia, manager and owner of The Tower, said the concept behind the venture was to encourage people to be healthier whilst still enjoying popular take away food.

He added: “It’s about offering something different to suit everyone’s taste and I see it as a more upmarket selection of fish that you wouldn’t find anywhere else.We have customers who welcome this alternative to the traditional menu and each time they return they try something new.

“Our menu is varied for a reason and we really encourage customers to think about what they would like to eat and look to change from their automatic choice of haddock.“Initially a lot of people are tentative about trying something new but nine times out of 10 they are happy that they have experimented with a taste they wouldn’t normally contemplate.”

Customers can choose from a choice of fish ranging from sea bass to salmon, and mackerel to tilapia – all guaranteed to put the kick back into the traditional fish supper. They can still have it  battered or bread crumbed if they so wish , or even oven cooked to cancel out the frying process – but even that is done in vegetable oil. And chips are also available, but they can be swapped for roast or boiled potatoes.
