Mallaig Harbour Set To Get Back On Track
HIGHLAND Council is preparing to get the Mallaig Harbour redevelopment back on course after a stormy five years during which the Harbour Authority's income was arrested by court order, following a dispute over the actual cost of the new £7m breakwater.
The breakwater was to have sparked developments to make Mallaig the premier west coast port in the Highlands. However, excessive swell in certain weather conditions saw the Authority in dispute with the breakwater design engineers Halcrow Crouch of Glasgow, and they also had a dispute with Morrison Construction who built the breakwater over an additional £5m over contract claimed by the firm.
The dispute with Morrison has been settled and a meeting will be held next week to try to settle the dispute with Halcrow Crouch.
Now Highland Council is preparing a Harbour Revision Order which will be placed before the Scottish Parliament when it reconvenes later in the summer. The Order requests permission for a new jetty at Inverie in Knoydart and for a new breakwater in Mallaig which will stretch beyond the lighthouse onto the outer skerry in the rock ridge on which the lighthouse has been built. Both projects are within the Mallaig Harbour Authority area. The Authority hopes work on the new breakwater could begin next year,subject to funding help. Once the breakwater is built, a new fish market is planned, as is a marina.
