Road opens up for big seafood festival
Published:  09 July, 2010

THE big Dorset Seafood Festival which takes place over two days this weekend is being given priority treatment over some important roadworks.

Dorset County Council has requested Southern Gas Networks, which is replacing a major gas main, on Boot Hill, one of the main approaches to the fish festival to restore two way traffic from Friday to Sunday night so as many visitors as possible can get to the event. After that it will revert to a one way system. The surfaces will also be re-instated.

The works are part of a £9 million transport  and facilities scheme to improve  the approaches  to Weymouth which is hoting the 2012 Olympic sailing events. A county council spokesman said that with so many people expected, halting the works and restoring the road was the only way to keep the traffic flowing smoothly fpr what is such a big event.

Up to 50,000 visitors are expected to attend the big fish extravanganza around Weymouth Harbour this weekend. Celebrity chef Mark Hix, who has a restaurant in nearby Lyme Regis, will be demonstrating his  seafood cookery skills. There will be around 60 stalls on show creating a seafood village around both sides of the old  harbour, where people will be able to sample a wide range of freshly cooked fish dishes. Another of the highlights is a "Passionate About Fish" exhibitionso visitors can learn about the various species, how fish is caught and how it is prepared. Finally, there will be a cook off for the final of the Dorset Young Seafood Masterchef competition.
