Peterhead growth powers ahead
Published:  18 June, 2010

WITH the exception of mackerel, overall fish values at Peterhead are powering away from last year’s levels, according to figures issued by Peterhead Port Authority.

The total tonnage of fish handled by Europe’s top white fish port is also well up.

The statistics for the first five months of this year show that all-species value at the port is running at £62,141,832 compared with £56,105,971 for the same time   last year.

Within the figures, the total value of white fish handled, covering consigned as well as direct landings is running at £27,143,131 compared with £24,029,897.

This is against the background of a tonnage drop from 18,320 tonnes to 17,891 tonnes.

On the shellfish front, value and tonnage are both up with 2,308 tonnes this year worth £3,355,315 compared with 1,251 tonnes worth £2,629,579 last year.

Mackerel value is down against slightly increased landings with 31,708 tonnes this year worth £23,971,856 compared with 30,583 tonnes worth £25,727,541.

However  the “herring and others”  category is seeing  double the tonnage and value with 34,735 tonnes worth £7,671,530 this year compared with 17,832 tonnes worth  £3,718,954.

The total tonnage of fish handled this year up to the end of May was 86,642 tonnes compared with 67,986 tonnes last year.
