JOHN Buchan Jnr from Peterhead was named commercial ‘Fisherman of the Year’ on Saturday following a tough competition at the Fishing 2010 exhibition in Glasgow.
With prizes totalling £5,500 on offer, the inaugural three-day event sought to find the UK’s most experienced and proficient commercial fisherman through a series of challenges against the clock that tested their skills and practical knowledge.
As well as being crowned Fisherman of the Year, John, who is skipper of the Ocean Venture, also picked up a winner’s cheque of £1,000, along with an all expenses paid trip to the Faroe Islands in August to participate in the world net-mending championships.
A delighted skipper Buchan said he was thrilled to win the award: “It was great to win this competition. It was an excellent event and there was a lot of interest in it amongst fishermen at Fishing 2010.”
Organised by Inverurie based global crew information services provider, Crew2crew.com, in association with the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen, the ‘Fisherman of the Year’ competition was one of the major highlights of Fishing 2010.
Graham Duncan of Crew 2 Crew said: “Congratulations to John for winning this prestigious award. He is a truly worthy winner and showed incredible practical skills and knowledge of the fishing industry.”
Fran McIntyre, managing director of QD Events, the organiser of Fishing 2010, said: “The Fisherman of the Year event was a fantastic competition and sparked a huge amount of interest at Fishing 2010. We are delighted at John’s success.
“This was our first year as the organiser of this show and we are extremely pleased at the positive response received from visitors and exhibitors – and we are now already working towards Fishing 2011!”
Fishing 2010 was held at the SECC in Glasgow from 20-22 May. It is the UK’s only annual commercial fishing exhibition and attracts visitors and exhibitors from around the world. More information at www.fishingexpo.co.uk
