Fishermen - don’t take the risk!
Published:  20 May, 2010

Don’t ignore the risks – wear a lifejacket – that’s the message to fishermen at Fishing 2010 from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

With recent statistics released from the Expert Lifejacket Panel Review on Fatalities, 13 fatalities involved fishermen of which 7 lives might have been saved if the fishermen had been wearing a lifejacket.

Nigel Blazeby, Principal Fishing Vessel Surveyor, MCA, says: “This year the MCA stand (C15) will be focusing on the importance of wearing lifejackets on deck and visitors will have the opportunity to try on lifejackets and discuss their merits.

We are also giving visitors the opportunity to feedback their views on safety matters; by completing a questionnaire they may win a CCTV colour system from Globe Electronics.

Whether you want to shoot the breeze about fishing; seek advice; book an inspection (free if your vessel is under 15m); or seek more in depth advice, we look forward to seeing you at fishing 2010!”

The MCA team on stand C15 will include Fishing Vessel Surveyors, Inspectors and a member of the Registration department from the UK Registry in Cardiff.
