PLANS for a new seafood processing village in Grimsby have moved a significant step forward.
A formal planning application has been submitted to the local planning authority, North East Lincolnshire Council, to build 20 modern fish processing units with offices, a waste processing unit and a new access road on an area of land near the main Grimsby Fish Dock.
If approved, work on the £2.5 million first stage of the scheme will start later in the summer with the first processors moving in around the end of the year. There is thought to be strong interest in the new units among fish merchants. The development should open the way to clearing the old Casbah area of the fish docks where fish merchants have been operating for more than 100 years. The development is widely expected to save at least 200 processing jobs that might otherwise have gone, as well as create around 100 new jobs.
Each unit will have 2,000sq ft of factory working space plus 1,500 square feet for offices and storage.A second phase is expected to double the number of units to 40. By combining all units on one site, it is planned to share facilities such as cold stores, a distribution centre and other common fish processes.
The project is spearheaded by Grimsby Seafood Village Ltd of which the principal directors are Peter Dalton and Gary Cadey.
Mr Dalton said recently: .“We know how important it is to the industry and people have been incredibly patient. Hopefully, they will see the reward before the end of the year.
Should fisheries be closed during breeding time to allow stocks to reach more sustainable levels?
