Published:  26 April, 2010

A NUMBER of UK companies are among the 43 finalists competing for one of the world's top prizes at the European Seafood Exposition which opens in Brussels tomorrow.

The finalists, chosen out of 94 entrants,  for the Seafood Prix d'Elite will go on to be judged by a distinguished jury of seafood buyers, chefs and industry experts, representing countries throughout Europe.

The products will be evaluated on their taste, originality, convenience, packaging, market potential, and nutrition.  To ensure credibility and accuracy in judging, points are tracked and audited by Ernst & Young.Winners will be selected in the following categories:-
• Two grand prizes are awarded for Best New Retail Product and Best New Foodservice Product.
• Special Awards are given out for Health and Nutrition, Convenience, Retail Packaging, Originality, and Best New Product Line. Now in its tenth year of honouring the finest new seafood products entering the market, the Seafood Prix d’Elite competition continues to grow in importance and prestige.

The UK entrants are:- The Grimsby based Saucy Fish Company,  an innovative new business launched by the Icelandic Group's Seachill operation; The Big Prawn Company , based in Norfolk, which is entering the contest for the fourth time; Grants Smokehouse Ltd; from Maryport in Cumbria and  the Organic Smokehose Ltd which is based in Shropshire.

This year's seafood show, which is also attracting a strong Scottish contingent of exhibitors, was threatened last week by the Iceland volcanic ash crisis. because flight in and out of Europe were paralysed for almost a week and Eurostar rail services were heavily booked. However, the emergency has passed and the show is expected to once more attract a record number of visitors.
