NORWEGIAN salmon exports are continuing to showing impressive growth following publication of the most up to date statistics.

The value of Norwegian salmon exports in October reached 2.2 billion Norwegian Kroners or around £236 million. This is the highest export value ever recorded for a single month and a rise of 28 per cent, or some £50 million compared to October 2008. The UK is a major market.

But following on from that exports for the last week reached 14,181 tons - up over 11 per cent from the a high of 11,824 tons for the same week last year. The average price is 28.2 Norwegian kroners against 26.05 kroners in the same period last year. Prices remain high, although it has come down slightly in recent days.

The volume of Norwegian salmon exports last October also set a new record with 83,536 tonnes - more than 16,000 tonnes, or 24 per cent more, in October 2008.

The Norwegian Seafood Export Council says this It represents an average of 121 fully loaded trailers daily destined for export.

Seafood Council market analyst Paul Aandahl said: 'The strong growth in volume and prices, which are well above the levels seen in 2008, shows that demand for Norwegian salmon is increasing.'

There is little doubt that the salmon crisis in Chile is leading to strong demand for Norwegian salmon. In October, the export volume of fresh salmon fillets to the US was 1,802 tonnes, an increase of 684 per cent compared to the same month last year.
