ONE of London's most popular fish and chip restaurants - and a big favourite among film and TV celebrities - was badly damaged by fire at the weekend.
The Sea Shell in Marylebone is now a virtual wreck after flames swept through the building as diners were settling down to an early evening meal.
The customers were led to safety by fire fighters who then set about trying to save the building, but without success.
The restaurant has been serving celebrities, tourists and families for more than 40 years and much of the building was badly damaged or destroyed.
Last year it was named as one of Britain's top fish and chip restaurants. It was particularly noted for its monkfish, halibut and haddock. In a recent review Time Out magazine said diners were served 'first rate fish and chips by black clad waitresses with all the elegance of Dior models'. Firemen are investigating the cause out the outbreak, but fires are not uncommon at fish and chip restaurants where food is cooked at high temperatures.
The many celebrity customers include Ruby Wax and Liza Minnelli.
