Scottish shellfish farm production survey results revealed
Published:  03 July, 2009

Minister for Environment Roseanna Cunningham today commented on the findings of the 2008 Scottish Shellfish Farm Production Survey.

She said: 'These figures underline the importance of Scotland s shellfish farming industry to our economy since 2007. Its total value has soared by almost 25 per cent in a year to £7.55 million, and the sector is on something of a roll.

'Our new aquaculture framework aims to capitalise on one of the world s fastest growing food producing sectors, underlining our reputation for being at the forefront of sustainable aquaculture and fisheries. The future is not without its challenges, and our new Shellfish Forum will help overcome hurdles as well as identify new opportunities.

'I recently attended the Scottish Marine Aquaculture Awards and witnessed many fine examples of one of our most dynamic and successful industries. Our new Eat More Fish campaign and the next steps of our national food and drink policy underlines our determination to enhance Scotland s growing reputation as one of the world's finest food producing nations.'
