The conservation credentials of Shetland's fisheries take a major step forward this week with the launch of new selective gear trials.
The initiative has been designed to help ensure fleets in Shetland can make the most of buy back options under the days at sea regime, maximising income during the tough economic climate. The trial aims to allow juvenile cod to escape the catch.
Operated by the Shetland's Fisherman's Association, in partnership with Marine Scotland Science, the project is being funded to the tune of £95,000 through the Scottish Industry Science Partnership (SISP). It s hoped the results will have a positive impact on gear options available under the wider Conservation Credits scheme.
