Experienced fisherman Derek Cardno has been appointed as the new Marine Safety Officer for the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation.
Based in Fraserburgh, Derek (42) is a working fisherman who will combine his job as mate on the pelagic vessel Forever Grateful with his new safety role with the Federation. In recent years Derek has developed a particular interest in marine safety, and prior to joining the SFF he lectured on the topic at Banff & Buchan College. He replaces Jim Evans from Eyemouth, who has retired.
Derek said: 'I’m looking forward immensely to working with the SFF and its membership on safety issues.'
Bertie Armstrong, SFF chief executive, said: 'We welcome Derek to the SFF and his great experience will prove extremely useful. I would also like to thank his predecessor Jim Evans for his excellent contribution to marine safety.'
Should people be 'stimulated' to eat white fish alternatives to cod?
