Responding to the launch of ‘A Fresh Start’, the renewed strategic framework for Scottish aquaculture, announced in the Scottish parliament last week, Scott Landsburgh, chief executive of Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation (SSPO), said: 'We welcome the widespread recognition of the importance of our sector and the support for its sustainable development.
'The key areas in the renewed framework should assist the development of a sustainable and profitable industry, both of which are vital if we are to continue to attract investment in remote, rural communities.
'As salmon farming makes a massive contribution to our economy, it is encouraging that the framework includes specific measures relating to improved planning and development as this is key to unlocking the potential of our sector.
'We look forward to the expressions of support translating into actions as legislation progresses through parliament in the form of the Marine Bill.'
Should fisheries be closed during breeding time to allow stocks to reach more sustainable levels?
