Last Monday morning we began assembling the two exhibition halls for the Fish Expo Faroes 2009. The exhibition halls stand on a football pitch in the valley of Gundadalur in central Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, which indicates the size of the exhibition. It will be exciting to see how this, by comparison, huge arrangement will come off this close to the town centre.
Fortunately all doubts in the early stages concerning the fulfillment of the exhibition were swept away by the flood of interest shown by exhibitors and other participants. We are now happy to state that despite global recession and talk of economic and financial crises, we have not experienced any trouble getting exhibitors to participate.
When the doors open at 10 a.m on May 27, 130 companies from the Faroe Islands and its neighboring countries will participate.
The exhibition will be opened by Heðin Mortensen, the mayor of Tórshavn, one of the main sponsors of the exhibition. By experience, we expect that more than 10.000 people will have visited the Fish Expo Faroes when the doors close at 16.00 p.m. on May 29.
In addition to the exhibition area in Gundadalur, there will be a floating exhibition in the small bay of Vágbotnur with exhibition boats mooring at the quay.
The companies participating represent almost every product and service used by marine- and fishery industries. In addition to exhibiting new products, such as equipment, tools and supplies, we also aim to gather people to facilitate contacts with other people and companies.
The exhibitors come from the Faroe Islands, Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Scotland and England. The Faroe Islands will in every respect become the centre for the marine and fishery industries in Northern Europe in the period of May 27-29, 2009.
One of the top agendas at the exhibition is energy policy and the conservation of energy. The Ministry of Trade and Industry has invoked companies and others working with energy to participate to encourage fish industry companies to implement an active energy policy in support of the environment.
On May 28 there will be a conference on the economic situation in the fishing industry at the Nordic House in Tórshavn, headed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. At the same time an internal meeting for members of the Faroese fish farmers, Havbúnaðarfelagið, is scheduled at Hotel Føroyar. So next week in Tórshavn stands in the sign of the Pisces Constellation!
While 12 companies from Iceland participate in the exhibition in Gundadalur, another group of businessmen from Iceland will be travelling around visiting factories and companies in the Faroe Islands.
The city of Tórshavn has prepared itself to welcome the large number of visitors expected. Shops, restaurants and other places have been well informed about the exhibition, and we expect the town to be filled with people in the evenings.
So now it only remains to wish you all a good exhibition.
