Revamped |Brixham fish market swings into action
Published:  15 May, 2009

BRIXHAM'S revamped fish market swung into action this week when two fish wholesalers received the keys to new larger units to allow them to develop their businesses.

The growing market and the surrounding fish industry area is undergoing a multi million pound regeneration programme. The new occupants are the fish firm David Walker & Son and wholesale fish merchants Roberts Fisheries, both previous occupants of the existing fish market. Two other units are also being made ready for fish processing businesses.

The Mayor of Torbay Nick Bye said recently that the development marked a big step towards future prosperity for the fishing port."The new employment space builds on the success of other employment-related opportunities that we have created in the Bay with the support of our partners, including the South West Regional Development Agency," he added.

Although located in a popular holiday area, fish remains at the heart of Brixham and the South Devon economy. The fish market first stage of this has received over £3 million of various European funding along with more than £6 million through Torbay Council.

Local regeneration leader Councillor Chris Lewis said: "The new fish quay area is really starting to take shape now and as we near completion of the first phase of works it seems poignant that the event is celebrated with local businesses who will be directly benefiting from the new facilities." The work would compliment the quality of fish that was being caught off the Devon and Cornish Coast, he added.
