A NUMBER of UK seafood companies are jostling for pole position at the European Seafood Exposition's Prix d’Elite New Products Competition as the show opened in Brussels today.
The contest is in its ninth year and continuing to grow in importance and prestige. Of 93 entries this year, around 36 new products from 10 countries will be evaluated by a distinguished group of seafood experts, who will judge each finalist on taste, originality, convenience, packaging, market potential, and nutrition.
The innovative nature of the products generally stems either from a contemporary twist to traditional products or the creation of new product categories for seafood.
“The overall competition creates great opportunities to get new products in front of high-level buyers from all over the world,” explained Vice President Mary Larkin of Diversified Business Communications, the European Seafood Exposition organiser.
The British entries include Lyons Seafood, The Organic Smokehouse Company, W Simpson Ltd of Hull, and The Big Prawn Company.
The Seafood Prix d’Elite competition awards prizes in two main categories: Best New Retail Seafood Product and Best New Foodservice Product. Special awards are also given at the judges’ discretion to winners in the following categories: Convenience, Health, Retail Packaging, Originality and Best Seafood Product Line.
The European Seafood Exposition is arguably the world's premier seafood exhibition with over 1,650 exhibitors from 76 countries are represented. There is a strong presence from both the Grimsby fishing industry, exhibiting under the Food Town Europe banner, and from the Scottish catching and processing industries.
