Investigation launched into dumping of dead fish in Cardiff
Published:  03 April, 2009

A MAJOR investigation has been launched into the dumping of hundreds of dead fish in and around Cardiff Docks.

The Environment Agency is taking the incident so seriously that they have alerted their special crime team to look into the incident. Their big fear is that diseases could be passed onto the fish population both inland and out at sea.

Around 250 fish, mainly mirror carp, were found in the port's East Bute Dock. But this is the second such incident in the past two days. On Wednesday another 500 carp were found fly tipped in the city suburbs.Officials from the agency's crime team say they believe the two incidents were linked and have sent away the fish for genetic testing. No contamination has been found in the quality of the dock water.

A spokesman for Environment Agency Wales said: 'The fish we found in the Dock and in the containers in the city are the same species and of a similar size. It is too much of coincidence to find these fish in and around Cardiff within a few days of each other.' He stressed that the public had a responsibility to make sure anything, from fish to fridges, whether sea or freshwater variety, was disposed of properly.

'If someone has dumped these fish into the dock, they could pass on disease to the local fish population,' he added. Anyone who sees any dead fish should not touch them but instead contact the free emergency hotline on 0800 807060.
