Consolidation in fish meal operations

A POWERFUL new trans European fish meal organisation has been created following a decision by Origin Enterprises and Austevoll Seafoods ASA to combine their UK, Irish and Norwegian fish meal and fish oil operations.

United Fish Industries (UFI) Grimsby, also known as Grimsby Fish Meal, is part of the United Fish Industries Group, which are wholly owned subsidiaries of Origin, have now become part of a larger consolidated company following the merger.

A joint statement said: 'The merger means the fish meal plants at Grimsby, employing 29 people, is strongly positioned as a key driver in the production of fish meal and supply across northern Europe. United Fish Industries is a leading producer of fish meal and fish oil in Ireland and the United Kingdom.'

Sister plants of United Fish Industries Grimsby are also located in Aberdeen, Shetland and Killybegs, Ireland and are now consolidated with plants in Norway. This combination is expected to enhance the strength of the businesses in the globally traded marine proteins and oils sector.

Austevoll's wholly owned Norwegian subsidiary Welcon Invest AS ('Welcon' ) is Europe's premier manufacturer of fishmeal and fish oil with operations in Norway.

Proforma turnover of the enlarged group is approximately 175 million euros.The announcement said the merger will also bring benefits in terms of improved raw material landings and other efficiencies, adding that it had positive implications for the Grimsby plant and its local suppliers. Welcon will be led by a strong management team comprised of executives from both businesses.
