SAMHERJI, one of Iceland's largest fishing companies, which also has important catching and processing interests in Scotland and on the Humber, has issued a statement stating that it remains in a strong position despite the economic turmoil.
It said: 'Samherji has not missed out on the difficult economic situation but these conditions have however not affected Samherji as much as many other companies in Iceland.
'The company´s foundations are strong and in many countries. The company's arranging in recent years makes, together with the operations abroad being much more profitable, the company stronger and more able to tackle the tasks ahead in a different economic setting.'
Outside Iceland the company has operations in Germany, Poland, the Faroe Islands and the UK. In Scotland it owns the Aberdeen based Onward Fishing Company which has at least one freezer trawler. In Grimsby it has Ice Fresh Seafood, producing for supermarket groups and Seagold at Hull, marketing frozen at sea fillets, along with UK Fisheries, also in Hull.
The statement added: 'We have been working hard in the past weeks to adjust the company´s running to these changed conditions both here in Iceland and in our markets abroad. The main undertaking has been the financial flow to and from the company and its subsidiaries. The economic situation in the world is delicate and no one knows how it will develop in the next months. Samherji' s present position is, however, strong and the company is able to withstand the difficulties it is facing.'
