East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Bridlington Harbour Commissioners and the regional development Yorkshire Forward have agreed the new marina layout plan which also include a new fishing harbour and improved facilities for pleasure boats.

It is planned to provide about 200 berths in the existing harbour area accessed by a lock, with the remainder in a new harbour to the south.

Council leader Steve Parnaby said: "A boat marina and fishing harbour will be of tremendous benefit and it all adds to the people who are using the town, using the facilities and spending money which ultimately creates jobs."

George Traves chairman of Bridlington Harbour Commissioners, said he was pleased a way forward had been agreed to preserve the unique status of the fishing harbour while developing its operational potential for the future.

But some members of the council have expressed dismay that what they described as a "smelly fishing harbour" was being placed next to a yachting marina.

Bridlington, as well as being a vibrant seaside resort, is firmly established as the UK's top port for lobster and edible crab with a fleet of more than 35 fishing vessels. Much of Bridlington's catch is exported to some of France's leading restaurants and hotels. There are also a small number of white fish vessels
