THE price of fish in the UK is starting to show an upward movement this week, according to the latest market reports.
In spite of reasonable supplies throughout the country, M&J Seafoods, one of the leading suppliers to the food service industry, say they have detected an increase in the price of cod and salmon in particular.
The company's weekly market soundings show that buyers "are having to pay top dollar" for codlings in particular if they want to secure anything like a decent supply. The price of large cod is also starting to climb. It is a similar story with halibut and turbot despite good shipments from Norway and Canada.
The situation is a little brighter with haddock with excellent quality fish coming in from Norway.
Until recently salmon was one of the few popular fish where prices remained stable. But that seems to be changing, says the M&J report. Prices are likely to climb by up to 20 per cent this week, with the possibility of further increases in the next couple of weeks. One of the main reasons that production from Norway, Europe's main supplier of salmon, is down while demand is on the up. Last week M&J announced it had secured the services of two Cornish boats to supply albacore tune. The first, the vessel, Novo Pedro, has just brought in over 900 fish, while the other boat, the Charisma, is currently on the fishing grounds, ensuring good supplies over the next couple of weeks.
