YOUNG'S Seafood is celebrating major success in the Business Commitment to the Environmental Leadership Awards and was the only food manufacturer to collect a top accolade.
Young's parent company Foodvest received the prize for its 'Fish for Life' fishery protection programme, which started with the Grimsby based seafood producer and has now spread to the whole Foodvest Group.
The overall winner was Innocent Drinks, maker of Smoothies.
Mike Parker, deputy chief executive of Foodvest, said: "We are all absolutely delighted that Fish For Life has received further recognition.
It is both good for our own industry and the wider business community that seafood gets a national platform through events such as this alongside other important environmental projects." He added that the group intended to be a world leader in responsible seafood sourcing and good environmental practice.
Sir Anthony Cleaver, president of the awards, praised Young's and said rising fuel prices and carbon taxes meant that businesses could no longer afford to ignore the environmental impact of their operations. He added that winning companies like Young's were providing a good example for other businesses to follow.
Just two months ago Fish For Life received the Community Big Tick Award and also won two prizes last year, including one from Seafish.
Young's employs a total of over 3,000 people on fish production in the UK, mainly in Grimsby and at Edinburgh, Annan, Stornaway and Frserburgh in Scotland, along with a traditional salmon smokehouse at Spey Valley in the Highlands.
