TONNAGE and value of fish landed at Peterhead is running well ahead of last year according to statistics issued by Peterhead Port Authority.
Figures up to the end of May show that 68,574 tonnes of all fish were handled at the port compared with 60,703 tonnes for the first five months of 2007.
Total white fish tonnage was up from 15,082 to 16,828 tonnes with shellfish up to 1,484 tonnes compared with 1,157 tonnes.
Mackerel was down to 33,573 tonnes compared with 37,454, but herring more than doubled from 7,010 tonnes to 16,689 tonnes.
In gross value terms, white fish value was up from £23,489,609 to £25,100,697 with shellfish up from £2,661,535 to £3,117, 635.
Mackerel fell from £24,499,059 to £22,430,277 while herring was up from £1,112,421 to £2,534,898.
Total gross value of all fish rose from £51,262,624 to £53,183,507.
