CHILE'S national fisheries service, Sernapesca, has authorised the evacuation of over three million salmon from the danger zone close the erupting Chaitén volcano.
However, Sernapesca states that the complete evacuation must first be checked by the Maritime Authority after being assured that the salmon are not infected with ISA virus, as they will be transported mainly to Chiloé Island.
A first batch have already passed this test and will be transported over the weekend.
Within the first security ring, which has a diameter of 30 kilometers from the Chaitén Volcano’s active cone, there are seven salmon ongrowing sites belonging to Camanchaca, Trusal, Pacific Star and Yadrán.
SalmonChile’s regional manager, Carlos Odebret, said that the nearest ongrowing site to the volcano is 12km from the cone and that there are no hatcheries or other land-based installations which could be damaged by the lava.
