Mike Park...crisis session |
A SPECIAL meeting of members of the Scottish White Fish Producers' Association has been called for this Saturday to discuss the worsening fuel crisis facing fishermen.
Mike Park, the executive chairman of the association said today that the meeting would be held at 10am at the Waterside Inn at Peterhead and it was important as many members as possible attended,
Mr Park, who is a member of the new fuel task force group set up by the Scottish Government, said the purpose of the meeting was to "harvest the mood" of the membership in relation to the escalating fuel costs.
"I am also anxious to soak up any ideas as to how individual members feel it is best to approach this issue and how they feel pressure can be put on the people who can deliver a solution."
Mr Park, who will chair the session, said it was also important to assure the membership that he and other industry leaders were working hard to try to find ways round the crisis.
Asked if fishermen were moving towards militancy on the issue, Mr Park said that the price of fish was an important factor-and whitefish prices had increased significantly over the last few weeks.
"But the fact of the matter is that the oil price is having an adverse affect right across all sectors of the industry and we are taking this issue very seriously indeed as will be underlined at Saturday's meeting."
